POST FALLS - Whether you want to get your adrenaline pumping or just kick back and relax, the Post Falls Festival has something for you.
Lawnmower drag racing, a traditional Father's Day favorite in Spirit Lake, makes its debut in Post Falls Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., on Fifth Avenue next to the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, 201 E. Fourth Ave. The event is free.
"We were looking for a fun family event that already had a good model that could work in Post Falls," said Pam Houser, the chamber of commerce's executive director. "We are expecting a big crowd."
Friday's schedule also includes music, craft and food vendors and a beer garden at Q'emiln Park from noon to 8 p.m. Blue Dog RV's free Movie in the Park will be "The Lego Movie" at 9 p.m. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for both the movie and the lawnmower races.
Saturday's highlights include the parade on Seltice Way at 11 a.m., music at the park from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., craft/food vendors and kids activities from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be a breakfast at the Post Falls Senior Center from 7 to 10 a.m., a car show at Calvary Lutheran Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and an open house at the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue station on Idaho Street at noon.
Sunday's slate includes a community worship service at the City Hall plaza at 10:30 a.m. and music and craft/food vendors at the park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Post Falls Parks and Recreation Department organizes the vendors, music and many of the festival events.
There will not be a carnival at this year's festival, as the provider had other venues that were more profitable, city officials said.
All of the organizational pieces fell into place for Post Falls to host the lawnmower races this year. Ace Hardware agreed to be the grand sponsor. There will be at least 12 vendors on site giving away goodies.
Houser has family in Spirit Lake and has been to the races a few times. She connected with Marc Kroetch, organizer of the Spirit Lake races, to get the event revved up for Post Falls.
"We got together and decided it would be a great event for our community," Houser said. "I presented it to the (chamber) board and they all got behind it so we started making arrangements in early January. It truly has taken a village to make this happen."
Houser said the intent is to hold the races during the festival each year. The drag-race course is 200 feet, and Post Falls police, firefighters and volunteers will be on hand for safety purposes.
During the festival there will be a free shuttle bus service to the park from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Red Lion Templin's Hotel and Post Falls City Hall. The shuttle will make its rounds every 20 minutes.
