ELMO — Quite possibly the last thing longtime bus driver Anthony Injunplant thought he would see when he woke up Tuesday was the birth of a bouncing baby boy.

But at about 9 a.m. that morning, as Injunplant’s CSKT Transportation bus was stopped in Elmo picking up passengers, a local woman, Sharon Buckskin Michelle, gave everyone on board something to remember for the rest of their lives.

“She was in labor and her water broke,” CSKT Transportation Dispatcher Leroy Black Jr. said. “The bus driver freaked out and called me. I called law enforcement to get an ambulance and Tribal Health, and the baby was born 10 minutes later, before the ambulance arrived.”

Black said a local doctor and some law enforcement officials were on scene at around the time the woman gave birth, but that the details remain sketchy.

The woman and her newborn son were whisked away to St. Joseph Hospital in Polson. Black said the mother called the CSKT Transportation office later in the afternoon to say thank you for their speedy help in her delivery and that she and her son were doing fine.

“She called to tell ‘Injun’ thanks and that she was sorry about what happened on the bus.”

In all the excitement of the day, no one remembered to ask the baby’s name or weight.
