Smith and White Beat the Heat at Ephrata Raceway Park

EPHRATA - Extremely hot temperatures and a full moon greeted racers at Ephrata Raceway Park on Saturday.
The 101 degree heat made ERP's quarter-mile asphalt track very slippery, wreaking havoc for racers in every division.
Moses Lake driver Adam Smith adjusted to the hot conditions to clock the fasted qualifying time, win the trophy dash and take the victory in the main event in the Pepsi Racing 360 sprint cars.
David Macken, of Moses Lake, started out strong and led the first eleven laps of the 25-lap main event.
Adam Smith took the lead from Macken on lap-12. Macken held on to the second position until Joe Smith, of Moses Lake, passed him with three laps remaining. Joe Smith finished second with Austin Weber, of Moses Lake, taking the third spot.
Maken ended the night in fourth.
The full moon seemed to have an influence on every class, especially the Schaeffer Oil mini stocks.
While a superstition, racing under the full moon seemed to be more fact than fiction for the four-banger division. On the first lap of the "B" division heat race, a racing incident on the backstretch took out four of the six cars.
Sid White, of Othello, and John Hagood, of Ephrata, battled hard during the 25-lap combined main event in the "A" division. White assumed the lead on lap-2 while Hagood hustled to the second spot on lap-3.
The pair spent the rest of the feature racing nose to tail while working their way through slower traffic. White's Mustang was able to exit the corners well and could pull away from Hagood.
However, Hagood's Mustang was strong in the corners and closed the gap between White and Hagood. White cruised under the checkered flag first with Hagood on his tail to take the second finishing position. Michael White, of Moses Lake, finished third.
Meanwhile, Dianna Schiable, of Moses Lake, was the first "B" division racer to cross the finish line.
Soap Lake's Aliah Razey finished second.
The V6 super cars took to the ERP high-banks in a combined main event. Ethan Smith, of Moses Lake, won the Kim Janke State Farm Youth V6 super car division while Anthony Johnson, of Ephrata, took the top spot in the Pioneer Muffler II Adult V6 super cars.
