SWIMMING

CAST swimmers at sectionals: Three swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team competed at the Speedo Western Zone Senior Sectional meet in Gresham, Ore., last week. The meet drew more than 800 high level swimmers from all over the Western U.S., and is the fastest and most competitive meet CAST will participate in this summer season.

Nicole Rozier led the Crocs with an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly, ninth place in the 200 butterfly, and 17th place in the 200 individual medley. She qualified for the Junior National Championships in December in all three races, breaking the Inland Empire 15-16 year-old record in the 100 fly and CAST team records in all three races.

Maggie de Tar swam personal best times in all six events she entered. Her highest finish and only finals swim was the 400 meter freestyle, where she dropped 10 seconds and placed 26th. Four of Maggie's six swims were team records, and she just missed the Junior National bonus cut in the 400 free.

Sarah Nicholls competed in her first Senior Sectional meet, breaking a team record in the 100 breaststroke and finishing 26th in finals. She also swam a personal best time in the 100 butterfly.

CAST will next compete at the Long Course Championships in Wenatchee, Wash., July 25-27.

The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team sent 63 swimmers to Spokane for the Summer Solstice meet June 20-22.

CAST dominated the top of the high point charts. Sarah Gonzalez, Caleb Markowski, Gabe Markowski, Jon Archer and Maggie de Tar all claimed high point awards for their age groups. Markowski and Archer were a part of a three-way tie for first place for the 13-14 boys.

Other high-scoring Crocs - Haily Pierce and Kathryn Moon went 2-3 in their age group, while Sarah Nicholls, Nicole Rozier and Kyle Jones all placed second in their respective age groups.

Maggie de Tar broke the 15 and over girls 400 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 200 free, and 800 freestyle records. Nicole Rozier claimed the 15 and over 400 IM and 100 breaststroke records, and just missed the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly.

Kathryn Moon, Hailey Pierce, Hope McWilliams and Sara Kaitz broke the 11-12 girls 200 freestyle relay record.

LEGION BASEBALL

Prairie on to state: The Prairie Cardinals 15-and-under team beat Colville and Richland last weekend to place second and earn a berth to the Washington state tournament this weekend in Mount Vernon, Wash.

The Prairie team is comprised of boys from Lakeland and Post Falls high schools and is coached by Jason Bradbury (Lakeland High baseball coach) and Jesse Marks (Lakeland High graduate and former Prairie Cardinals player).

The Cardinals (33-9) went 12-0 in league play. They also won the Yakima Summer Slam tournament and the Fourth of July Wood Bat Tournament.
