Desert Dogs first at Wash. Baseball Open

WARDEN - The senior River Dogs squad wasn't the only team to enjoy success at the Washington Baseball Open.

The Desert Dogs also posted a first place finish in their bracket. The team finished 5-1 and played two intrasquad games, improving to 40-25 entering the Babe Ruth World Series Aug. 7.

The Desert Dogs opened the tournament with a win against Laces Baseball (Everett), 8-6, before blowing out the Tri-City Outlaws, 12-2.

Columbia Basin continued its hot hitting in two games against Eastlake (9-1 and 14-6).

In a rematch with Laces, the Desert Dogs came out the victor again, 9-3.

The Kennewick Braves spoiled a perfect tournament run for the Desert Dogs, taking the finale 12-6.

Logan Moss had two solid appearances over the four-day tournament, recording two wins.

Sheldon Kosa finished 7 for 18 with two doubles and six RBI.

Isaac Wersland hit a phenomenal .800 from the dish, driving in seven runs.

Jess Ward and Zach Askin were 9 for 18 and 8 for 14, respectively.

Jim Townsend was 6 for 8 with two doubles and five runs scored.

The Desert Dogs will kick off their tournament run Aug. 7, 5 p.m., against Klamath Falls, Ore. at Johnson-O'Brien Stadium in Ephrata.

The River Dogs will follow at 8 p.m. against San Gabriel Valley, Calif.
