Prairie splits at Border Wars tourney
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 7 months AGO
COEUR d'ALENE - Treavor Hammell scored three runs for the Prairie Cardinals, who beat the Spokane Cannons 16-3 in five innings of a Border Wars tournament game on Saturday afternoon at Thorco Field.
Logan Bruner hit a two-run single in the second inning and James Prockish had four hits for Prairie (5-2) against the Cannons.
"It was a pretty clean game defensively for us," Prairie coach Ron Mackie said. "Our pitchers threw well and the kids played well behind them."
In the nightcap, the Cardinals and Spokane Northstars combined for 14 errors - eight by the Cardinals - as the Northstars beat the Cardinals 11-8.
"We just kind of had a letdown in focus in that second game," Mackie said. "Up until that game, we'd been playing pretty solid defensively. This time, our pitching was decent, but the defense lost some focus behind them."
Dalton Strong had two hits and two RBIs for Prairie (5-3), which faces the Walla Walla Bears today at noon, then plays the Northstars again at 2 p.m. to conclude tournament play at Thorco Field.
