Prep state rodeo finals at Majestic Valley

The Montana High School Rodeo State Finals take place this week at Majestic Valley Arena with 242 cowboys and cowgirls competing for awards, scholarships and a trip to the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Action begins this morning at 9 a.m. with cutting events. The cutting championships will take place from 3-5 p.m.

Competition resumes on Thursday at 9 a.m. and runs through Sunday.

There will be evening performances on Friday and Saturday starting at 6 p.m.

The top 16 in each event advance to the championship go round on Sunday, which starts at 11 a.m.

The top four finishers qualify for nationals, which will be held July 13-19 in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Those placing fifth through 10th can advance to Silver State International Rodeo, which is held in Winnemucca, Nevada, July 1-5.

Admission is $30 for an all-week wristband while day passes are $8 for today and Thursday and $10 for Friday through Sunday.

Kids under 12 are admitted free.

Rodeo queen events are scheduled for Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Hampton Inn.

The last time Kalispell hosted this event was 1984 at Carpenter’s Arena. That was also the first point-system rodeo held in Montana to qualify for nationals.

Bozeman hosted the state finals the last five years.
