Dorothy F. "Dotty" Herek, 96, went home to our lord, May 22, 2014, at Life Care Center in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Dotty was born July 25, 1917, to Joseph and Edna Curcio in Chicago, Ill. She grew up in Chicago and married Bud Jewell on October 11, 1937. Dotty worked as a telephone operator until 1950 when the family moved to Southern California. She then worked for Pierce Insurance Co., in their actuarial department and also studied for her agent's license to sell life insurance. In 1959, Dotty and Bud divorced; he preceded her in death on December 16, 1976.

The following year in 1960, Dotty met Ed Herek and they were married December 2, 1961. She then went to work for Verda Poultry as their bookkeeper. Dotty worked for Verda Poultry until she retired in 1979. She and Ed moved up to Lake Cachuma in the Santa Barbara area. Dotty was involved in the Lady Elks and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

In 2001, Dotty moved to Fort Worth and then to Lewisville, Texas, to be closer to her son, Jim Jewell. She joined the Red Hats and was still involved in the VFW. She moved to Hayden, Idaho, in 2010 and moved in with her daughter, Carole Carlin.

Dotty enjoyed playing cards of any kind, crossword puzzles, sudoku, and bingo. She had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Dotty was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1981; parents, Joseph and Edna; and sister, Theresa. She is survived by her children, Jim and Carole, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

Funeral Mass and Interment will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 30, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. There will be Celebration of Life after the services. Donations in Dotty's memory may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, Idaho 83835.
