SPOKANE VALLEY - Coeur d'Alene High senior Sara Chalich saved her best for last.
Her last half of high school basketball.
Last overtime game in her prep career.
Chalich hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points, earning Most Valuable Player honors and helping the Region beat the Metro All-Stars 93-92 in overtime in the 21st annual Jack Blair Memorial All-Star Girls Basketball Classic on Tuesday night at University High.
"It was definitely adrenaline and nerves in the first half," Chalich said. "At halftime, (Region and Coeur d'Alene High coach Dale) Poffenroth told me to calm down and play our game. And my shots finally fell."
The speech was nothing new between the two.
"He's told me that a million times over the years," Chalich said of Poffenroth. "He's told me when I'm set, I'm deadly. I just got my feet under me and shot the ball."
Chalich, who has signed with NAIA Carroll College, was one of five Coeur d'Alene seniors (Chalich, Sydney Williams, Brittany Tackett, Madison Sumner and Sydni Parker) in the game, Chalich and Parker coming off the bench. Williams had eight points and Tackett added five for the Region.
"She did a nice job," Poffenroth said of Chalich. "What she did, she's capable of doing all the time. It's an all-star game, and those things can happen, but she played really good tonight and it was really good to see."
Unlike the last time Poffenroth coached the five Coeur d'Alene seniors, he was unable to get them on the floor at the same time on Tuesday.
"I thought about putting all five of them in together late in the game," Poffenroth said. "But it's an all-star game and you've got to move the other kids around. Sara had a good game, and so did the rest of them and some of them found out you've got to be in good shape to play in this game."
Chandler Smith of Brewster High, who has signed with Nebraska, led all scorers with 24 points for the Region, which won for the second straight year and third overall in the series - all in the last six years.
The Metro, which featured players from the Greater Spokane League, opened the game on a 13-0 run, only to be caught by the Region (North Idaho and other eastern Washington schools) on a jumper by Tackett to give the Region its first lead at 19-17 with 8:24 remaining in the first half.
"Just fun to watch them play," Poffenroth said. "Some of the kids, not my kids, but the other kids kind of surprised me with how well they played."
Laura Stockton of Gonzaga Prep led the Metro with 19 points, followed by her high school teammate Hannah Caudill with 17. Stockton was named the game's Most Inspirational Player. Caudill has signed with Montana State.
The Metro led 81-78 with 1:48 remaining before Smith hit a 3-pointer to even the score at 81 just 15 seconds later.
In overtime, Caudill was fouled attempting a 3-pointer, but missed the third free throw with eight seconds left which would have tied the game, and the Metro was unable to get another shot off before the buzzer to seal the win for the Region.
