Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 8 months AGO
After losing a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease, Bill took his last "at bat" on May 13, 2014.
William E. Clift was born Christmas Day, 1940, in Port Angeles, Wash., to Don and Merle Clift. The family moved to Spokane Valley, Wash., and Bill attended Otis Orchards Elementary and West Valley High School where he was a three-sport standout graduating in 1959.
Bill attended EWU, earning both a bachelors and masters degree which were the foundation of his teaching and coaching careers. He taught and coached football, basketball, and softball at Newport High School where he completed his over 30-year teaching and coaching careers. Prior to and after his retirement, Bill played softball on several senior teams.
In 1962, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Klomp. They had over 51 wonderful years together. Bill and Sylvia enjoyed boating on Lake Coeur d'Alene, golfing, softball tournaments, traveling, and spending time with family and their many wonderful friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sylvia; and his daughter, Neta. He is survived by his son, Darren; brother, John Clift (Debbie); and sister, Mary Llewellyn (Steve).
A memorial service to honor Bill's life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 19, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 501 Wallace Ave., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
