Cardinals handle Lumbermen in AA play

COEUR d'ALENE - Early on in Wednesday's American Legion AA baseball game between Prairie and Coeur d'Alene at Thorco Field, it was like a mirror image of last Wednesday's game.
Like last week, the Cardinals jumped all over their opposing pitcher, scoring four runs in the first inning and six after the second on their way to a 14-3 rout of the Lumbermen, which was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Like the last game, which was won 8-7 by Prairie at Thorco Field, there were a few errors by Coeur d'Alene, three to be exact, and on Wednesday two of them led to runs scored by Prairie (6-5).
And just like last week, Prairie's balance was obvious - seven starters had at least two hits.
"The key is the balance," Prairie coach Ron Mackie said. "We're figuring out our system. I have a different approach to coaching. We work a lot on situational hitting."
One of several Prairie who followed Mackie's approach was Jacob Koski, who went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and scored the last run in the big first inning.
"You jump on them early, it helps our pitcher (Logan Bruner)," Koski said. "It keeps them relaxed up there, they're throwing strikes. Their first kid (Lums starting pitcher Elliott Sparks), we knew he throws a lot of curveballs, so we sat back and hit it to the opposite field. That was our approach."
Koski's teammates almost appeared like they knew what Sparks was throwing, hitting him hard for all six runs over 1 1/3 innings for Coeur d'Alene (4-6). James Prockish went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs,
Trystan Valente tacked on a two-run home run in the fifth and he went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs.
Meanwhile, Prairie starting pitcher Logan Bruner carried a shutout into the fourth inning, when Coeur d'Alene scored all three of its runs. Devin Kluss and Suraj Kedia each hit RBI singles and Dominic Congliaro hit into an RBI groundout.
Bruner allowed just five hits and did not allow any extra-base hits.
"Logan's been solid," Mackie said. "He's allowed either four or five hits in all three of his starts."
Coeur d'Alene found no such luck in making a comeback attempt like in the last matchup against Prairie.
"More than anything, there are not too many teams you can beat if we give them six runs in the first two innings," Lumbermen coach Zach Clanton said. "You gotta think, chip away, chip away. You can't get a six-run home run and sometimes we forget about that."
Coeur d'Alene plays tonight at home against the Spokane Expos.
Prairie plays a doubleheader Saturday at the Spokane Bandits.
