American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day will bring together outdoor enthusiasts across the country on Saturday for the annual celebration of America’s trail systems and their supporters and volunteers.

Here are events around the Flathead Valley:

Montana State Parks is celebrating National Trails Day at Lone Pine State Park near Kalispell with a volunteer trail work day from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Assist with basic trail construction and maintenance and help improve one of the most beautiful parks in the Flathead Valley.

A free barbecue lunch, compliments of the Kalispell Rotary, will be provided immediately following the trail work. For more details, contact Amy Grout, park manager, at 755-2706, extension 3.

The Montana Wilderness Association is offering a free professionally guided hike called  “Wings, Tails, Tracks and Trails “ at the Owen Sowerwine Audubon Area on Saturday.

Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the Montessori School parking lot on Willow Glen Drive. Come prepared for a full day of learning in the dynamic environment of this unique, wetland niche.

Learn about habitats and wetland conditions that help migrating waterfowl; search for presence and sign of raptors, woodpeckers, herons, cranes, swans and waterbirds; and also track-search for mink, otters, muskrats, amphibians and birds.

Brian Baxter’s “Hands On, Boots on the Ground “ programs are known to be fun and informative.

This is a moderate hike, less than 3 miles round trip with some off trail.  Register at wildmontana.org and check the wilderness walks or call Baxter at 406-291-2154.

Volunteers are needed to help maintain the Living Wetlands Interpretive Nature Trail from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Whitefish.

Open since July 2013, the wheelchair-friendly trail is available to the public to learn about the history, science and beauty of the area and get a glimpse of  wildlife.

Volunteers will meet at the main trailhead on the new Viking Drive, east side of Wisconsin Avenue, across the road and slightly south from The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Wear work clothes and boots and bring raingear as necessary. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, mosquito repellent.

RSVP for lunch by calling 862-4327.

Join Whitefish Legacy Partners for a trail work day on the Whitefish Trail at Swift Creek.

Learn about conservation efforts in the Whitefish Range while helping to maintain the Swift Creek Trail. Participants will be greeted by old-growth forest, a raging Swift Creek, vast mountain panoramas and peaceful Smith Lake.

The project will be led by Montana Conservation Corps and Whitefish Legacy Partners crews and is featured in the Montana Wilderness Association’s Wilderness Walks. Crews will be working on brushing, drainage maintenance and tread work.

Volunteers should bring  gloves, lunch, water and rain gear.

Meet at Whitefish Depot Park at 9 a.m. or, if driving direct, meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Swift Creek Trailhead just past Lower Whitefish Lake Road about 8 miles from Whitefish on East Lakeshore Drive.

For more information about this project and other scheduled outings, visit www.whitefishlegacy.org, contact Carla Belski at 862-3880 or email carla@whitefishlegacy.org.
