HAMILTON — Voters in Ravalli County ousted two members of the county commission and resoundingly rejected an attempt by the suspended county treasurer to remain in office.
Incumbent commissioners Suzy Foss and Ron Stoltz lost in their Republican primary races Tuesday while commissioner Jeff Burrows defeated his Republican challenger and advances to the general election.
All three voted in September to name Valerie Stamey as treasurer. Stamey was suspended with pay in January after falling months behind in depositing money and providing financial reports. She also refused to answer questions about a $22,000 civil judgment in South Carolina.
Doug Schallenberger received 71 percent of the vote in the race for District 5 commissioner, compared to about 14 percent for both Foss and Jan Wisniewski.
Wisniewski is the former chairman of the county planning board who was not reappointed after making racist remarks about Native Americans at a November commission meeting about the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ plan to put some tribal land in the county under federal protection.
Former state legislator Ray Hawk received 72 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for Stoltz in the District 1 primary. Burrows received just over 51 percent of the vote to defeat Bill Menager in the District 4 race.
In the treasurer’s race, Dan Whitesitt won the Republican primary with 67.5 percent of the vote, compared to nearly 28 percent for Bonnie Dugan and just over 4 percent for Stamey, who was placed on paid leave Jan. 23. Mary Kay Browning ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for treasurer.
