ROYAL CITY - The sign-up period is still in effect for the U.S. Open Day golf tournament on Saturday, June 21, at the Royal Golf Club.

U.S. Open Day commemorates the United States Golf Association's U.S. Open Championship, which is played on Father's Day weekend. Pro Randy Puetz sets up the course with the toughest playing conditions of the year.

"The fairways are longer, the rough is taller and the greens are faster," he said. "We try to create U.S. Open conditions and see who can survive."

The tournament will get under way at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $25, and men, women and juniors are invited. Golf carts and food are extra.

This will be a regular play individual tournament, with prizes awarded in gross and net categories. There will be long drive and closest to the pin contests.

You may use your own handicap, if you have one. If not, Puetz will assign you one based on your recent golfing history.

To enter, call 346-2052 or write to royalcitygolf@centurylink.net.

You should reserve riding carts (limited supply) early.
