COEUR d'ALENE - Connor Cardinel struck out nine and pitched a one-hitter as the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen "AA" team blanked the Spokane Expos 3-0 on Thursday at Thorco Field.
Cardinel walked one for the Lums (5-6). He allowed a one-out single in the second inning, and got out of a bases-loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts. He allowed just two baserunners over the final five innings.
"He's the most consistent guy we've been throwing out there," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "He's got great velocity, a good breaking ball ... when he's down in the zone he's really, really tough to deal with. His breaking ball, any time he needed to throw it for a strike, he could."
Jonny Plum doubled in a run in the first for the Lums, and Gibson Green added a sacrifice fly. Shawn Montee added an RBI double in the fourth.
"It was very, very needed after last night's performance," said Clanton, whose Lums lost 14-3 in five innings to North Idaho League foe Prairie.
Coeur d'Alene travels to Lewiston on Tuesday to play Lewis-Clark in a league doubleheader.
