Vandals announce

2014 Hall of Fame class

MOSCOW - Six individuals and two sets of teams will inducted this fall into the University of Idaho athletic hall of fame.

This 2014 class includes Bob and Jan Cowan, Jake Scott, Russ Winger, Jackie Ross, Sherrie Crang, the 1966-73 men's tennis teams, and the 1937-41 cross country teams. The induction ceremony and banquet are Sept. 12 at the University Inn-Best Western. The class also will be recognized at the Hall of Fame football game when the Vandals take on Western Michigan on Sept. 13.

The Cowans, for whom the Cowan Spectrum is named, are being honored for their longtime contributions to Vandal athletics. Both are graduates of the University of Idaho and both are past recipients of the Alumni Association's Jim Lyle Award. Bob was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2004. They are members of the Stadium Builders Club and have served on the UI Foundation Board as well as the national Vandal Boosters/Vandal Scholarship Fund board.

Scott, a native of Lewiston, was a four-year starter for the Vandals before embarking on a 10-year professional football career. He played for the 2006 Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts and was on the 2004 Football Digest all-rookie team. He started 128 of his 131 career NFL games. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering.

Winger is a six-time NCAA all-American thrower and a 10-time qualifier for NCAA championship meets. He finished second in the NCAA indoor shot put three times, and was an NCAA top-five finisher six times. He was the 2005 Big West Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Year, the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Performer of the Year, and the 2008 WAC Outstanding Field Performer. He was a WAC Athlete of the Week nine times.

Ross was a 10-time Big Sky Conference champion and in 1990 set a record in the outdoor triple jump that still stands. She was the Big Sky Conference's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 1990, 1991 and 1992. She competed in the 1988 Olympic Games for St. Vincent.

Crang was the 1982 AIAW national champion in the 3,000 meters and helped the Vandals to a second-place national finish. She was a member of the 1982 regional cross country championship team, which had a 41-4 dual meet record. She still holds Idaho's record in the 5,000 meters and is second-all-time in the 3,000 meters and fourth in the 1,500 and 10,000 races.

The Vandals' men's tennis teams won seven successive Big Sky Conference titles from 1967-73, while the 1937-41 men's cross country teams similarly dominated the Pacific Coast Conference with titles in all four of those years.

Local club volleyball team

plans fundraiser car wash

COEUR d'ALENE - The North Idaho Thunder under-13 gold volleyball team is having a car wash and raffle to raise money to go to the Soiree in Anaheim.

The car wash is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Car Wash Plaza, on the corner of Ramsey and Kathleen.

Shock assigned

wide receiver Flowers

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock announced the assignment of veteran wide receiver Nichiren Flowers (6-foot-2, 200 pounds).

Flowers played at Nevada from 2002-05, totaling 214 receptions for 2,648 yards and 14 touchdowns. In his senior season he started all 12 games, tallying 55 receptions for 706 yards and two touchdowns.

A three-year veteran of the AFL, Flowers first broke into the league with the now-defunct Los Angeles Avengers in 2007. His best season came in 2010 with the former Chicago Rush when he hauled in 61 receptions for 892 yards and 17 touchdowns.

"Flowers has the AFL experience, he's more than capable of coming here and being productive for us right away," Shock coach Andy Olson said. "He's crafty, he definitely knows the AFL game. I think the most important thing is he knows how to get open."

In two corresponding roster moves, the Shock placed defensive back Josh Pleasant (5-9, 195) on injured reserve and also placed defensive back JT Fitzgerald (6-1, 205) on inactive reserve.

Spokane plays at Jacksonville on Saturday.
