Kinsey Gomez

Oregon State track and field

Gomez, a junior from Coeur d'Alene High, was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District track and field/cross country team, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. She currently has a 3.84 GPA as a marketing major. On May 29, at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Ark., Gomez finished 13th in the 10,000-meter run in 34 minutes, 41.41 seconds, missing out on a trip to the NCAA championships by eight seconds. "Kinsey ran brilliantly," Oregon State coach Laura Harmon said. "It was the best race she could have run. She beat a lot of All-Americans and some really talented women. You have to start to look at yourself in a different light when you start to run with women like that. Yes, she was one spot out of going to finals, but if you put it in perspective, she's in the top 30 in the country. Which is pretty amazing."

Matt Hammond

Grinnell College baseball

Hammond, a freshman from Post Falls High, was third on the team in batting with a .350 average (28 of 80) with 11 runs scored and 28 RBIs. The Pioneers, a Division III school in Iowa, finished the season 21-17. Earlier in the season, he was named Athlete of the Week in the Midwest Conference.

Makayla Strand

Community Colleges of Spokane track and field

Strand, a freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, finished third in the women's pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 5 inches at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship meet on May 20 at Spokane Falls Community College.

Kyle Johnson

Binghamton Mets

Johnson, an outfielder who played at Lake City High and Washington State, was batting .333 (13 for 49) in his last 10 games entering Friday, scoring eight runs and driving in three runs for the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. He was batting .319 (45 for 141) with 31 runs scored this season.
