Avista Utilities is alerting its customers on the east side of Lake Coeur d'Alene that they will experience a power outage early Sunday while Avista crews upgrade the substation that serves that area.

The outage is expected to occur from 4:30 to 9:30 a.m., and will affect customers from Beauty Bay to Carlin Bay, and east to Blue Creek Bay, Wolf Lodge Bay and the Alder creek area.

Avista is investing about $2.1 million in upgrading the substation built in 1973. Included in the upgrade is a new higher capacity transformer that is more energy efficient. All work is expected to be completed in August.

"This is the first major upgrade to this substation which has been serving customers for 40 years. This extensive upgrade will position the east side of Lake Coeur d'Alene for future growth and reliability for years to come," said Greg Gfeller, Avista's director of eastern operations. "We apologize for any inconvenience customers experience by the planned outage."
