MOSES LAKE - Four new pedestrian crossings and upgrades to four more have been added to a stretch of Broadway Avenue in Moses Lake with a history of pedestrian and vehicle collisions.

The project, which began in late April, was completed Friday with new pedestrian crossings at Melva Lane, Gibby Road, Gumwood Street and Third Avenue. The crossings include new rectangular rapid flashing beacons and audible push buttons to aid visually impaired. The rapid flashing beacon lights have produced between 80 and 90 percent compliance in vehicles yielding to pedestrians at high-risk crossings, according to the state Department of Transportation.

This $400,000 pedestrian safety project also included replacing existing flashing beacons with the rapid flashing beacons at Driggs Drive, Burress Avenue, South Western Avenue and Dogwood Street.

In the past five years before construction, there had been seven vehicle-pedestrian collisions in the 3-mile stretch of Broadway Avenue, three of them fatal and two more resulting in serious injuries. WSDOT partnered with the City of Moses Lake on this grant-funded project to increase safe crossing opportunities for pedestrians. A federal grant was awarded for the project in February 2013.
