SANDPOINT - The Coldwater Creek brand may survive after all following its purchase by Sycamore Partners, a New York City-based private equity firm.
Sycamore Partners officials announced Monday they acquired the Coldwater Creek brand and other intellectual property through its affiliate, CWC Direct LLC. The purchase was arranged for an undisclosed amount during Coldwater Creek's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Wilmington, Del. Sycamore Partners intends to re-launch Coldwater Creek as an "independent portfolio company."
According to Sycamore Partners managing director Peter Morrow, the firm saw value in Coldwater Creek's brand recognition and established customer base.
"Coldwater Creek is an outstanding brand with a 30-year heritage and strong support from its loyal base of longtime customers," he said in a press release. "We are excited about adding Coldwater Creek to our growing portfolio of leading retail brands and look forward to reintroducing the brand to the marketplace."
Sycamore Partners officials haven't yet detailed what the brand reintroduction will entail. Blair Fasbender, a PR representative for the firm, declined to comment Tuesday on plans for the women's clothing brand established by Dennis and Ann Pence in 1984.
The purchase is in line with Sycamore Partners' past business purchases. In 2013, it acquired Hot Topic for $600 million, according to the New York Times. The company's investment portfolio also includes Aeropostale, Jones New York, the Kasper Group, Kurt Geiger, MGF Sourcing, Nine West Holdings, Pathlight Capital, Stuart Weitzman and Talbots, adding up to more than $3.5 billion in assets. According to a press release, Sycamore Partners' strategy is to partner with established management teams to improve business performance.
Coldwater Creek's intellectual property is the latest asset to be sold off since the company declared bankruptcy in April. A month after the announcement, the company initiated a sale to liquidate its store and warehouse inventory. In addition, the company reached an agreement with Litehouse Foods to sell a portion of its campus headquarters in Kootenai.
While the sale means the eventual resurrection of the Coldwater Creek brand, it likely doesn't mean much for the local economy following the loss of more than 300 jobs at Coldwater Creek's corporate headquarters in Kootenai.
