Stumptown Players presents a world premiere reading of the play “Neil Before Me” by Nick Spear at 7:30 p.m. on June 18 at Crush Lounge in Whitefish.

A fundraiser for the nonprofit Stumptown Players, the play reenacts the possibly true events of a bizarre night in the mid-1990s, when Neil Young and Neil Diamond were accidentally double-booked at the same music venue.

One is an American Jewish songsmith with a penchant for pop; the other a Canadian gentile iconoclast with an addiction to flannel. The two artists navigate the weird waters of a show that could go wildly wrong at any moment.

Did that fateful night turn into a rock and roll duel to the death? Or did two disparate musical genres collide to create an unholy lovesongchild? One thing is for sure: The world would never be the same.

The cast includes Nick Spear as Neil Young and Anthony Mead as Neil Diamond and features Marco Forcone as drummer Neil Peart and Don Caverly as bassist Neil Patrick Harris.

A no-host bar with hors d’oeuvres opens at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at www.stumptownplayers.org or by calling 871-6447.
