SUPERIOR – The Superior Rockies season came to an end June 6, as they were narrowly defeated in the second round of the season ending tournament in Plains.

The Clark Fork Valley Majors Baseball League allows each team to compete in the playoff style tournament regardless of what their regular season record was.

None of the competing teams had to deal with bad weather as the sun was shining, warming the field to the 70-degree mark, which was a major difference from when the league started in April.

Parents who wanted to get their kids more involved in the sport created this baseball league. No Mineral County school has their own baseball team.

Some scores were by large margins during the season, although the rules state that each game has to be played at least two hours or five innings, whichever comes first.

The best team to come out of the winner’s bracket faces the team from the loser’s bracket.

Superior played Noxon in the first round getting pummeled by their opponent 11-1.

Pitcher Logan Wood of Noxon got the win for pitching the game against the Rockies.

The Plains Pirates and pitcher Derick Curry carried the team over Thompson Falls, 10-0.

Thompson Falls loss meant they would face Superior as their next opponent in the second round.

Although the game was closer this time around for Superior, the pitching duo of Trey Fisher and Trevor Harris were able to close out the Rockies 4-3 to eliminate Superior from the tournament.

The third round of the tournament pitted Plains against Noxon.  Nate Zigler threw the second complete game shutout of the day for the Pirates beating Noxon 10-0.

Noxon would go on to face Thompson Falls. Fisher and Harris combined forces again for another Thompson Falls victory of 4-3 forcing Noxon out of the tournament and into the offseason.

The championship game featured Plains versus Thompson Falls.

The Pirates would win easily as Curry was on fire yet again to lead his team to victory. Plains hoisted the trophy winning 5-1 over their opponent.

“The Plains Pirates completed a perfect season with a 15-0 record,” said Jon Zigler, league organizer and Plains coach.

The coaches would like to emphasize that this league is for fun, and that there are no winners and losers. Team scoring is kept, but individual stats are not. Every team in the Clark Fork Valley Baseball league was invited to play in the tournament.

The league features a minor league team and a major league team. As players get older, they can ascend into the major’s league and continue to play baseball.

Each league is a co-ed league, even though there are mostly boys, some girls choose to participate on each team.

The season is effectively over, however, an all-star game is tentatively scheduled to be played  next month on a date that is still to be determined. Each coach will nominate the best players from their team to play a couple more games before summer vacation actually begins.
