It wasn’t the greatest of mornings. With the temperature hovering around 50 degrees, skies overcast and the ground wet from rain the night before, it wasn’t the prettiest of conditions for a race.

That didn’t seem to matter for more than 200 athletes that turned out for the Rocky Mountain Bank Summit Classic 5k/10k runs on Saturday at The Summit.

Whitefish’s Brian Rhodes-Devey out-legged the competition in the 10-kilometer race, the former University of Texas athlete turning the corner into the finish line nearly three minutes ahead of the field in a time of 35 minutes, 57.1 seconds. Kalispell’s Mitch Yoder and Robert Hafemeyer finished second and third, respectively.

“The course was really nice from mile two to the turnaround,” Rhodes-Devey said. “It was pretty steep, pretty muddy as well. It was a great course. A good turnout for the weather. I enjoyed it.”

Even with the wet conditions, the weather was cool enough to allow athletes to stay comfortable.

“I’d rather run a good hard effort in weather like this rather than if it was overly hot,” Rhodes-Devey said. “It wasn’t too bad. Luckily it didn’t rain on us.”

Kaitlin Wride won the women’s 10k, finishing in 44:26.5. Fellow 14-year-old Ashley Montini was in second in 46:37 and Kalispell’s Ginia Hauf was third.

Kalispell’s Nicole Brist, a University of Great Fall junior distance runner, won the women’s 5k in 21:46.1, just ahead of Columbia Falls’ Sarah Latcham. Kalispell’s Suzy Stetson finished third.

Travis Neuman, a University of Oregon sophomore distance runner, won the men’s 5k by nearly a minute in 17:49.2. Flathead’s Jacob Calles finished second and Glacier’s Tevyn Stetson third.

In total, 229 runners and walkers competed in the four races, ranging from ages 2 to 84.
