Drought triggers federal assistance

RITZVILLE - Recent drought disaster designations in Chelan, Lincoln, Walla Walla, Benton and Franklin Counties have prompted federal disaster relief for farmers and ranchers.
Farmers and ranchers in Adams County may also be eligible owing to their proximity to the primary designated counties. Chris Holt, Farm Service Agency County Executive Director for Adams County explained that conditions can affect farmers and ranchers in areas bordering the designated counties.
"It's still early in the season," he said. "Moisture levels going into the spring were fair but the situation in the dry-land areas of the county are deteriorating rapidly from the lack of moisture, and time will tell."
A Secretary of Agriculture Disaster Designation was automatically activated on May 14 for Benton and Franklin counties. There was another on May 28 when Chelan, Lincoln and Walla Walla counties reached a D2 drought condition.
The designation makes available FSA emergency loans. The loans are low interest, currently 3.25% percent, with payment terms of up to 40 years.
"Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the designation to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merit, taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability," Holt said.
