A 24-year-old Seattle man in custody at the Kootenai County jail on multiple charges now faces additional charges following an investigation on gym thefts.

Ilya B. Glushchenko is suspected of stealing from several members of Spokane-area gyms while they exercised from November through February.

Glushchenko was arrested in Kootenai County on Jan. 23 during a traffic stop.

"He was called in as a possible drunk driver," said Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Lt. Stu Miller.

He was arrested for driving while suspended and, during the impound process, deputies found drugs, paraphernalia and stolen property inside the vehicle, Miller said.

"The stolen property we caught him with was from Spokane," Miller said.

Glushchenko was later released from jail, but he failed to appear for a court hearing so a Kootenai County warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested on the warrant in the Seattle area and he was booked into the local jail again on April 11. His bond was originally $20,000, but a judge later reduced it to $5,000.

In the Spokane-area gym theft cases, victims had their wallets, car keys and even firearms stolen from their lockers while they exercised.

In some incidents, the lock had been cut off the locker, but in most cases the property was left in unsecured lockers, according to law enforcement. Most who had their car keys stolen also had items stolen from their vehicles.

"The victims quickly called their banks to report their credit/debit cards as stolen and, in many of the cases, the banks advised the stolen cards had already been used at nearby retail stores to purchase unknown items for large sums of money," a Spokane County Sheriff's Office press release states.

Detectives determined one of the main items that was being purchased with the stolen cards were several $500 Visa gift cards.

Detectives obtained surveillance video from several of the retail stores showing Glushchenko as the suspect using the stolen cards.

Glushchenko now faces charges for second-degree theft, second-degree identity theft and money laundering.

Law enforcement doesn't have evidence Glushchenko committed gym thefts in Kootenai County.
