COEUR d'ALENE - What took nearly $2 million and approximately 16,000 man-hours to complete, includes 1.5 million pounds of floatation, 352,000 pounds and 6,200 concrete decking tiles, 11 miles of 2-inch x 2-inch galvanized steel angle and nearly 5 miles of electrical wiring to complete?

Answer: The rebuild of 11th Street Marina.

Representatives from the Idaho Department of Lands, city of Coeur d'Alene, the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, Mountain West Bank and the contractors involved in the marina rebuild will be honored Saturday at the marina.

"The completion of this project underscores what can happen when private interests and state and local government entities work together," said Jim Hail, president of the Board of Managers for the 11th Street Dock Owners Association. "Our marina has proudly partnered with the city of Coeur d'Alene and the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department to provide permanent moorage space for a city-owned fire boat that will serve and protect the community."

The new marina features concrete floating docks, new electrical and plumbing services, a new ramp to the main dock walkway, new dock boxes and power pedestals for slip owners. Long a feature on the east side of Tubbs Hill, the 11th Street Marina went private in 1999 and features 113 slips, not counting the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department moorage.

"This was huge project and our goal was to support our community by keeping our rebuild dollars local," Hail said.

Harrison Dock Builders was selected for the dock construction. HDB estimated it has invested 14,000 man-hours in the project and kept crews working throughout the winter.

Eastlake Electric estimated 1,600 man-hours on the 11th Street Marina project. Apex Plumbing and Heating estimated between 350 and 400 man-hours for the rebuild.

"This project cost our association nearly $2 million and I am proud that every dollar stayed local," Hail said.

Mountain West Bank provided the project funding.

"We appreciate the foresight Alison Gonsalves, vice president of commercial lending at Mountain West Bank, had in the rebuild project as well as Mrs. Gonsalves' confidence in our association," Hail said.

While Harrison Dock, Eastlake Electric and Apex Plumbing handled the heavy lifting, other local companies like Tip Top Tarps, Crescent Electric, Spokane Galvanizing and Pacific Steel were all integral to the rebuild.

Although a private marina, 11th Street Marina provides boaters access to a public pump-out station through its partnership with Kootenai County Department of Parks and Waterways.
