Conigliaro shines

for Lums in opener

COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene starting pitcher Dominic Conigliaro pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out four and walking two, in keying the Lumbermen's 6-2 victory over Wilkinson Baseball Academy at Lake City High in the Best of the Northwest tournament on Thursday.

Coeur d'Alene (9-11) lost its second game, 8-4, to the Northwest Blaze at Thorco Field.

"We would've liked to gotten a sweep," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "It was nice to go out and play early in the morning. We tend to struggle a little bit. Dominic kept the defense involved. Any time you can go out and throw a three-hitter, you'll take that as a coach, that's for sure."

Gibson Green had a two-RBI triple after Devin Kluss drove in a run with a single.

In the second game, Kluss went 3 for 4 and Conigliaro had a two-RBI single, as the Lums fell short.

"He sets the tone in our lineup," Clanton said. "Dominic started a rally in the seventh inning."

Coeur d'Alene plays today at 9 a.m. at Thorco Field against the Spokane Crew, then again at 2 p.m. at Thorco against the Missoula Prospects.

Bruner tosses

one-hitter for Prairie

Earlier, Prairie fell to the Spokane Bandits 8-3.

Thursday's games were moved to Terry Gorton Field at Lakeland High due to soggy conditions at Post Falls High.

Bruner struck out five, hit one and walked six.

"Our defense played well behind him, and he kept them off balance," Prairie coach Ron Mackie said.

Earlier, the Bandits scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow open a 2-1 game.

"We just lost focus, booted a couple of balls, and they put together four or five hits in a row," Mackie said.

James Prockish went 5 for 6 on the day for Prairie (7-12), and Brian Howell had a pair of hits in the opener.

Pod play moves back to Post Falls High today. Prairie plays the Spokane Expos at 8 a.m. and Sandberg Baseball at 12:30 p.m.
