COEUR d'ALENE - State Sen. Bob Nonini, R-Coeur d'Alene, was the biggest campaign spender in the month of May, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Secretary of State on Friday.

Nonini spent $30,342 in the last month of the May 20 primary election, and most of that, roughly $17,050, was on advertising with The Coeur d'Alene Press. He raised $12,468 during the same time period, and is sitting on $12,135 going into June.

Nonini will face Democrat Jerry Shriner for the 3rd Legislative District Senate seat in November. Shriner failed to report his post-primary campaign finance report, and so did Nonini's Republican primary challenger, Pat Whalen.

For the 3rd District House seat A race, incumbent Rep. Ron Mendive, R-Post Falls, raised $1,184 and spent $3,209 leading up to the primary. He still has $5,640 in campaign funds heading into the November elections, where he will face Democratic challenger Michelle Lippert - who hasn't raised or spent anything on her campaign to date.

Mendive's Republican primary challenger, Terry Werner, neglected to file his campaign disclosure forms Friday.

In the 3rd District House seat B race, Greg Gfeller raised and spent the most money in a three-way race for the Republican nomination. He raised $6,025, spent $7,949, and still has $2,058 in the bank.

Gfeller lost his bid for the open seat vacated by Rep. Frank Henderson to Don Cheatham. Cheatham raised $837 during the same time period and spent all of that on his campaign. He has an outstanding debt of $5,632, and so far he is unopposed headed into the November elections.

Jeff Ward was the third candidate seeking House seat B in the 3rd District. He raised $1,614 in the month of May, spent $2,223 and has filed paperwork to terminate his campaign.

4th Legislative District

Incumbent Sen. John Goedde, R-Coeur d'Alene, who lost his seat to challenger Mary Souza, raised $3,500 and spent $11,383 in the last month of the primary. He is still sitting on $41,288 in unspent campaign funds.

Souza ran a successful lean campaign, raising only $1,850 and spending $2,688. She has $33 left in her campaign heading into the November elections, where she will face Constitution Party candidate Ray Writz, who has not raised or spent any money.

House seat A in the 4th District went to incumbent Rep. Luke Malek, who failed to file his campaign disclosure report on Friday. His challenger, Toby Schindelbeck, raised $3,009 in May and spent $4,058. He still has $450 in campaign funds and has $1,000 in outstanding debts.

In House seat B, incumbent Rep. Kathy Sims, R-Coeur d'Alene, secured the Republican nomination after raising $3,034 and spending $6,291, most of which went to advertising in The Coeur d'Alene Press. She reported $5,043 in outstanding debt.

Sims is headed into the November election cycle with $4,230 in campaign funds. She will face Democrat Anne Nesse, who raised $1,720 in May - $1,500 of which came from the Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee.

Nesse has spent $491 to date and has $1,770 in the bank, with $522 in outstanding debt.

Sims' Republican primary challenger Rick Currie raised $175, and spent $2,296, all in advertising with The Coeur d'Alene Press. He banked $1.78, and reported $500 in debt.

2nd Legislative District

Incumbent Sen. Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, ran unopposed in the primary and is so far unopposed in the November general election. He still raised $1,000 in May, and spent $1,750 on other campaigns supporting southern Idaho candidates Russ Fulcher, Christ Troupis and Monty Pearce.

Incumbent Rep. Ed Morse, R-Hayden, spent the most in the 2nd District but still lost his House seat B to challenger Eric Redman.

Morse raised $11,783 in May and spent $14,926. He has $10,333 and listed $10,000 in outstanding debt.

Redman raised $1,371 and spent $6,672 during the same period. He has $3,300 banked and reported $5,000 in debt. He is, so far, unchallenged in the November general elections.

House seat A incumbent Rep. Vito Barbieri, R-Dalton Gardens, did not file his campaign disclosure forms on Friday, but his Democratic challenger in the November general election, Cheryl Stransky, raised $1,995, and spent $100 during the reporting period. She also received $1,500 from the local Democratic central committee.

Barbieri's Republican primary candidate Fritz Wiedenhoff raised $3,575 and spent $4,317. He reported that he still had $1,753 at the end of the filing period.
