COEUR d'ALENE - Windermere Real Estate agents rolled up their sleeves Friday and got serious about giving back when they spent their Community Service Day cleaning and beautifying Children's Village.

More than 50 agents washed, cleaned, built, planted and performed whatever tasks were needed. Windermere agent and service day coordinator Dick Jurvelin of Coeur d'Alene has been an agent for more than 20 years. He said the agents like to help spruce up Children's Village because the organization has a special place in its heart.

"The big thing about (Children's Village) is that the staff here is unbelievable," he said. "They are moms all the way. To have them come out and mow lawns and rake leaves, wash windows, clean the cupboards takes time away from the kids. If we can help minimize some of the time they have to do those things, they can spend that time taking care of the little ones."

The 2014 Windermere Community Service Day is conducted as a corporate event, meaning agents in several states and Canada were simultaneously somewhere giving back to their communities. Jurvelin estimated more than 1,000 agents were participating in the event.

"It's great," he said. "The name of the game, as they say, is to give back to the community. To give back to the community as a team effort, you can't replicate that."

Loretta Reed has been with Windermere since 1991. She said Windermere's eagerness to help others is a large factor in her longevity with the company.

"That's why I'm still with them, since '91. I haven't changed companies," she said. "We really give back to the community."

Lianne Gallinger has worked as an agent for a year and wore a hat reading "Happy Happy Happy" as she participated in her first service day. She and a few colleagues moved dirt and dug a hole to plant a tree.

"It's been fun," she said. "It's nice to give back to the community that gives to us."

She said it was awesome to work alongside her coworkers outdoors.

"We all get along really well," she said. "We're a team, inside the office and here."

Children's Village executive director Julie Lockhart said she looks forward to Windermere coming year after year.

"They come with a smile and their tireless efforts make a huge difference to the village," she said. "They do everything from power washing to mowing to weed-eating to painting to building. The last couple years we've had construction projects that they've taken on. We're so very thankful."
