Ravalli County suspends treasurer

HAMILTON (AP) — Ravalli County has suspended its interim treasurer after filing a lawsuit accusing her of official misconduct.
Valerie Stamey had been on paid leave since January for failing to file reports and deposit tax money.
On Wednesday, the county commission voted unanimously to suspend her without pay.
Stamey did not attend the meeting. Her attorney previously said commissioners knew of problems in the treasurer’s office but took no action to correct them.
The county attorney filed a civil lawsuit Monday seeking $29,000 plus interest from Stamey for failing to perform her official duties.
The county has spent $95,029 to fix the problems in the treasurer’s office.
The commission will meet in a week to decide how to fill the position until the next treasurer is elected.
