FOOTBALL

Dixon earns honors: Lineman Zion Dixon, who will be a senior at Lake City High this fall, picked up some awards at the recent Northwest Elite Football Camp in Seattle.

Dixon, 6 foot 4 and 295 pounds, was one of three MVP for the linemen in the "Best of the Best" competition, and he also got the Breakthough Player Award.

"Perhaps the biggest surprise of the NW Elite Football Camp was Zion Dixon of Lake City High School in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho," wrote Dirk Knudsen, chief editor of Rivals.com. "From the moment he walked in to the moment he took his last battle in the linemen MVP Zion put his stamp on the camp. College coaches were all impressed with the 6-4, 295-pound bruiser who laid down a physical and technically sound performance. He is big, agile, smart, and has what it takes to defeat any defensive linemen as he progresses. We see him as a Pac-12 level talent."

Dixon, who sports a 3.7 GPA, has attracted recruiting interest from Boise State, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, Washington, Washingtion State, Montana, Carroll College, Idaho State, Wyoming, Montana Tech and others, according to his father, Dan.

Bayley ties for third: Former Lakeland High star Derek Bayley tied for third and narrowly missed advancing in qualifying for the Salahee Players Championship on Monday at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.

Bayley, who has signed with Washington State, finished in a three-way tie for third with a 2-under-par 70, but lost in a two-hole playoff as University of Washington-bound Spencer Weiss won the third and final qualifying spot.

The 21st Sahalee Players Championship will be held at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., on June 30-July 2.

The PNGA partnered with Sahalee Country Club 15 years ago to create the "Western Swing" with the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship. The Sahalee Players Championship is the first leg of the swing, with the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur being played the following week. The two championships combined with a primary goal of providing amateur golfers in the West an opportunity to play two major national amateur championships without having to travel to the East Coast. This year will mark the 113th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship, and will be held July 6-11 at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.

Duffin third in qualifier: Allison Duffin of Hayden finished third in a qualifier for the 66th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship recently, shooting a 6-over-par 78 at TimberStone Golf Course in Caldwell.

The winner, Gabrielle Barker of Caldwell, shot 75 to advance to the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship July 21-26 in Flagstaff, Ariz.

U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier: Jae Hoon (Ian) Kim of Surrey, British Columbia shot 70-77-147 at Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane to grab the one available spot for the U.S. Junior Amateur, set for July 21-26 at The Woodlands, Texas.

Preston Roth of Rathdrum shot 78-80-158.

LEGION BASEBALL

No-no for Howard: Keaton Howard threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out seven as the under-16 Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen beat North Central of Spokane 10-0 at Thorco Field in Coeur d'Alene.

Coeur d'Alene improved to 10-4.
