FLORENCE — The Mission Valley Mariners outlasted the Bitterroot Bucs in a sloppy Game 1 before dropping the second game of the American Legion doubleheader in Florence on Thursday.
The Mariners overcame six errors in the first contest and faced a 6-2 deficit heading into the top of the seventh after a big fourth inning from the Bucs, where they scored four runs.
Mission Valley shocked Bitterroot with five runs in their final at-bat and held the Bucs scoreless in the bottom half for a 7-6 victory.
Mission Valley catcher Alex Killian had a game-high three hits, including a double, while teammate T.J. Olson drove in three runs.
Jared Young and Jacob Harrod both had two hits, Young driving in one run and Harrod finishing with two RBIs.
Bradley Pichler added an RBI for the Mariners as he went 1 for 4 from the plate.
Bransen Krebs earned the victory on the mound for the Mariners. He scattered six hits and didn’t allow a walk in his complete game win.
He struck out two batters in seven innings.
Logan Lueck and Brad Schaff each had doubles for Bitterroot.
Mission Valley couldn’t withstand the Bucs hit-parade in the second game of the twin bill, dropping the contest 8-3.
After each team scored two runs in the second inning, the Mariners held a 3-2 advantage in the third, but it wouldn’t last long as the Bucs tied it in the same inning.
Bitterroot would use a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Despite the loss, Mariners pitcher Zeke Webster-Yaqui struck out nine batters in five innings.
Mission Valley tallied three hits in Game 2, all of which were doubles.
Killian and Olson doubled again in Game 2, as did Pichler.
Pichler led Mission Valley with two RBIs.
Schaff was 2 for 2 in the second contest for the Bucs, where he hit the only home run of the day.
The Mariners will be on the road again on Sunday when they travel to Eureka to play the Kootenai Valley Rangers.
First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and it will be one nine-inning game.
