COEUR d'ALENE - A 38-year-old Coeur d'Alene woman was charged with two felonies for allegedly firing a handgun at her boyfriend during a domestic dispute.
Kari Brouwer had her first appearance in Kootenai County District Court on Wednesday, where she was charged with first-degree attempted murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
On June 23 at 6 p.m., Brouwer allegedly fired a shot at her boyfriend during an altercation at their home, located at 707 E. Walnut Ave. in Coeur d'Alene.
The alleged victim was not shot and no injuries were sustained, Coeur d'Alene Police Department Sgt. Christie Wood said.
"The boyfriend reported the incident to us the next day," Wood said.
Wood added that Brouwer was taken into custody without incident at her residence.
Brouwer, who appeared via closed circuit television from the Kootenai County Public Safety Building Wednesday, softly spoke the word "yes" when asked by Judge Scott Wayman if she understood the charges. Dressed in a bright orange prison jumpsuit, Brouwer hesitated when Wayman asked her if she would like a lawyer.
"Yes," Brouwer answered after the pause. "I don't have the money for one."
Wayman then appointed a public defender for Brouwer.
"These are a very concerning, alarming, set of circumstances of a somewhat unpredictable nature," Wayman said prior to setting Brouwer's bail at $100,000.
Wayman also issued a no-contact order between Brouwer and her alleged victim. A preliminary hearing has not yet been set in the case.
