Prairie finds offensive spark

POST FALLS - Sometimes, a baseball team just needs a spark.
In the case of Prairie, in the second game of an American Legion class AA North Idaho League doubleheader, it got a six-run outburst from the tail end of its roster.
The Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, four of which came from their bench, in a 7-3 win to complete a sweep over the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen.
In the first game, a 10-6 victory, Prairie (10-16, 5-1 NIL) took advantage of another huge inning, a seven-run third.
"That's something that these kids have had experience doing," Prairie coach Ron Mackie said. "We said we'd share that responsibility all year. We notified the bench guys that late in the game, they're coming in and we found the right situation."
That situation presented itself with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth. Pinch hitter Dustin Ceballos smacked an RBI single to score James Prockish for the go-ahead run.
Logan Bruner, Prairie's starting pitcher, came off the bench to bat for himself in place of designated hitter Killian Estes and reached on an error. He later scored on a wild pitch by Coeur d'Alene starting pitcher Dominic Conigliaro, then pinch hitter Trystan Valente walloped a two-RBI triple to deep right-center for the 7-3 lead over the Lumbermen (10-17, 5-8).
"I'm just playing the game the way it's supposed to be played," said Valente, who is in his third season playing Legion ball. "I just do my best, get my at-bats, put it in the hole somewhere. It's really nice to make nice, square contact and put one in the gap and make sure your teammates are always loud. It's always a good feeling."
Before the big inning, Conigliaro was cruising as he allowed one run on two hits during the first four innings. A suicide squeeze bunt by Kris Jackson scored the first run of the fifth, then Prockish doubled in Brian Howell to tie the game at 3.
"That's the story of our season so far," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "If you look at our losses, you'll find one big inning. We hit it hard, they (Prairie) played great defense. We get in our own way sometimes, we've just got to fix it. We're right in the middle of the (league) race. We need to start peaking at the right time before districts."
Prairie starting pitcher Logan Bruner finished off a complete game, allowing three earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one.
"He's been our most consistent pitcher and he's had five quality starts," Mackie said.
Jonny Plum, Steve Vaudreiul and Devin Kluss each scored for the Lumbermen.
In the first game, Jackson and Ceballos each had a double and a triple in keying the Cardinals' win. Jackson allowed two earned runs on four hits and he struck out six.
Coeur d'Alene plays Friday at home against the Spokane Bandits at 7 p.m. at Thorco Field.
