New Wave Time Trippers
The New Wave Time Trippers can’t escape the Flathead Valley, or 1985.
However, the time-traveling quartet of musicians is happy with its fate playing the alternative music of the 1980s for Northwest Montana audiences and beyond.
“We pretty much all grew up in the 1980s, and we’re just music fans above all else,” singer and guitarist Nick Spear said. “We love the alternative New Wave stuff that happened from 1978-79 and pretty much all the way through to the ’80s-esque sounding bands of today.”
The 1980s bands covered by the group include The Cars, The Cure, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Clash, Flock of Seagulls, U2 and Simple Minds. They also play iconic songs such as “Jesse’s Girl” by Rick Springfield and “Der Kommissar” by After the Fire.
Spear said the band often receives requests for 1980s hair metal, but those are kindly denied.
“We try to keep it as pure alternative New Wave as we can,” he said. “Most ’80s bands are covering stuff like Bon Jovi. That’s not the music we’re into.”
