COEUR d'ALENE - Kaylee Kosareff is going global.

The 22-year-old Coeur d'Alene High School and University of Idaho honors graduate is in the process of procuring funds to supplement her unpaid internship through the U.S. Commercial Services London Internship Program in London this fall.

She will be representing the United States Embassy at trade shows and meeting people from around the world while promoting exports of U.S. goods and/or services into the United Kingdom market and inward investment into the U.S.

Kosareff, of Coeur d'Alene, holds a bachelor of arts in international relations and dual minors in French and comparative international politics.

"I took a lot of classes in my international relations degree dealing with global partnerships since there's so much global expansion and globalization," Kosareff said June 18.

She was preparing to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, to acquire her master's in international development when she got the news a few weeks ago about the embassy internship. It came as quite a surprise.

"I applied for this internship on a whim, thinking there was no way I would get it," she said. "It's because it's usually big-city kids who get it."

Kosareff found that she is the only student from Idaho ever to secure this internship position, which is only offered to two students a year. Her lodging, food, rent and transportation costs for the six months of the internship are expected to be $8,000. She is currently balancing two jobs and student loan debt.

"For me, coming from a small town and being born and raised in Idaho, I just want to serve as an ambassador for other students in Idaho whether they be college grads or just considering going to college," she said. "It is possible to pursue big dreams and have them happen."

Kosareff has studied abroad in Holland, Germany and Italy and participated in many national and global volunteer activities, including the Algeria Youth Program where she worked in a leadership role with the U.S. Department of State and several Algerian youths.

"Going into that, I had this idea in my head that I would be the one teaching them or changing their life," she said. "It completely flipped once I lived with them. They changed my life."

She said working with kids from a developing nation and hearing their struggles at such a young age is what motivated her to pursue her master's degree. Once her internship in London is complete, she will again be packing her bags, this time for Scotland.

"I've never been to Scotland so I'm really excited," she said.

Kosareff's aunt, Nancy DiGiamarco, said she and Kosareff's mom are both very proud of her achievements.

"When she puts her mind to something, she doesn't deviate until she's accomplished her goal," DiGiamarco said. "She is pretty much the poster child of what one can accomplish when they get a secondary education and shoot for those stars."
