MOSES LAKE - For the second time in as many years, the best prep football players in the state will converge on Lions Field.

MOSES LAKE - For the second time in as many years, the best prep football players in the state will converge on Lions Field.

And for the second year in a row, Moses Lake will have a representative on the East squad.

In 2013 it was star quarterback Justyn Simmons and this year it will be do-everything back Brett Moser.

Moser received the nod after racking up 1,293 all purpose yards and helping the Chiefs earn a berth in the 4A State Football Tournament.

So far, Moser has been soaking up the experience with fellow players on both sides.

"It's been awesome," he said. "I've met a ton of kids that are just so cool. They're fun to hang out with and it's just been awesome knowing you're part of the All-State team."

Simmons was the first Moses Lake player to make the All-Star game since 2009. Head coach Todd Griffith credited Simmons and Moser's selection to their work ethic and mentality.

"I think that it's a credit to hard work for the kids," he said. "I think we've always had kids that were potential kids, but these kids have definitely put in the extra effort and spent the time and bought into the philosophy of our football program and it's showing."

Despite being a great player in his own right, Moser hasn't squandered the opportunity to learn from the best players in the state.

The East team alone features four state champions: Chiawana's Joey Zamora, Grady Graff, Blake Bishop and Kayden Maughan.

The foursome helped the Riverhawks to a dramatic 27-26 victory over Camas in the 4A state title game.

"I've learned a lot," Moser said. "Different techniques and, I don't know, just the way they carry themselves."

Moses Lake's second attempt at hosting the game has ran much smoother than the first.

Last year, torrential rain the week of the game ruined some events for the players. Thankfully, by game day the weather had cleared and the East was able to rout the West, 38-21.

With the hopes of not jinxing it, according to AccuWeather, the forecast for Friday is sunny with temperatures in the 80s.

"I know that (Moses Lake athletic director) Loren Sandhop does a great job of getting this organized and would think it was probably a little easier this year than it was last year," Griffith said. "The kids we have in right now are great kids and I think it's going to be a game just like it was last year, pretty exciting. The kids are talented, the kids have great character and have been showing that in their practice every day."

Moser said it hasn't been difficult getting back into football mode after the high school baseball season. He wouldn't want to show any rust in front of the hometown fans.

Moser will look to showcase his speed and versatility that helped him become one of the most dangerous offensive players in the Columbia Basin Big Nine last season.

Along with his all purpose yard total, Moser recorded 329 rushing yards and six touchdowns. The touchdown total tied him with teammate Jordan Lacelle for third most in the Big Nine.

Moser was also a threat receiving the ball, totalling 29 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns.

Griffith predicts that Moser won't have trouble making an impact Friday due to the fact East head coach, Gonzaga Prep's Dave McKenna, runs a similar style of offense to Moses Lake's.

"I think he's going to do great," he said. "The East side team guy runs a similar offense ... They run a similar offense to us. They're an option offense so I think he's going to do a great job. He's a good player and given the opportunity he's going to be fine."

With the best athletes in the state, Moser doesn't expect a lighthearted affair. Last year's game was competitive despite the score and Friday figures to be no different.

The players can't even relax when they play virtual football.

"I expect it to be very competitive," Moser said. "Everyone on the team wants to win, everyone's competitive ... We've been having Madden tournaments in our room and even everyone's getting all mad because they're not winning so I just expect the game to be even bigger. I expect and I really hope we win."

Kick off for Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. For Moser, it will be a nice reminder of when he dazzled the Moses Lake crowd under the Friday night lights.

"It's going to be my last game playing at our high school and having just all our friends here just one last time," he said. "It'll be cool just seeing everyone again."
