COEUR d'ALENE - Becoming the next executive director for United Way of Kootenai County just seemed right to Mark Tucker.
Tucker, who has served as the marketing and community development director for the United Way of Weld County in northern Colorado the past two years, was unanimously appointed to the position by a search committee.
"I couldn't think of a better location or organization that would be a better fit for my personal and professional goals," Tucker said. "We wanted to get back closer to family, and I have grown to greatly appreciate the community collaboration and focus of United Way."
Tucker replaces Caryl Johnston, who stepped down in March after eight years to be the director of the North Idaho Rural Health Consortium. His first day on the job was June 20.
Sarah Garcia, local United Way board president, said Tucker's communication skills were prominent.
"We were all impressed by his demonstration of understanding of the United Way and its mission," Garcia said. "Mark has already demonstrated to us his dedication to collaboration and good communication. We are really excited to have him on board."
Tucker has a master's degree in nonprofit management. He has more than 20 years of nonprofit experience. He formerly worked for the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede festival and the International Festivals and Events Association.
Tucker is a graduate of Washington State University. He grew up in Port Angeles, Wash., and his wife of 19 years, Lisa, grew up in Forks, Wash.
United Way's board appointed a search committee to perform a nationwide search for a new executive director after Johnston stepped down.
The local United Way has a staff of three, a board of 15 and many volunteers. The nonprofit has raised between $350,000 and $400,000 for charities per year in recent years.
The United Way will distribute funds Aug. 6.
