A Columbia Falls man is in jail after allegedly vandalizing All Families Healthcare and attempting to break into another business on Tuesday.

Zachary Klundt, 24, was arrested after Kalispell police were called to the 1100 block of South Main Street shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday. A resident had reported a man tried to pick the lock in the front and back of the combination home and business. The resident reported the man was possibly drunk and seemed unsteady on his feet.

Officers converged on the area and located Klundt, who matched the description given by the resident. He had a concealed, loaded handgun and several other weapons,  according to a news release from the Kalispell Police Chief Roger Nasset.

During Klundt’s arrest and transport to the police station, “substantial similarities” were noticed between Klundt and the suspect in the break-in and extensive vandalism at All Families Healthcare early Tuesday.

Klundt is in the Flathead County Detention Center on preliminary charges of burglary and carrying a concealed weapon. Other pending charges may include felony criminal mischief, attempted burglary and theft.

An official estimate of the damage to the clinic — Kalispell’s only facility offering abortions — has not yet been compiled, although Nasset said it will be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

“There is extremely extensive damage, so they’re going to have to price medical equipment and different portions of the structure of the facility as far as Sheetrock and carpet,” Nasset said. “There was just so much damage, it’s going to be a while before we have an accurate estimate of what the damage is.”

Nasset described his department’s past contact with Klundt as “very limited.”

The investigation of the crime at All Families Healthcare was a cooperative effort of the Kalispell Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with substantial assistance with crime-scene security from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Posse.

Kalispell police spent all day Tuesday investigating damage at the clinic.

In response to the crime, the local 40 Days for Life vigil is being delayed for at least one week. The 24-hour-a-day vigil outside the clinic was due to begin on Wednesday.

“Violence and vandalism are opposed to our belief and continued focus on a prayerful and peaceful means to oppose abortion,” a statement from the vigil’s leadership team said. The team is evaluating “if and when we resume our on-site vigil at this abortion clinic.”
