Olney musher Steve Riggs braved the harsh winter conditions March 1 to win the Flathead Sled Dog Fun Run held on the trails in Olney.
Temperatures hovered right around zero with clear skies and beautiful trails for sled dogs. Riggs, Clayton Perry, Shane Pearson and Adam Buch crossed the finish line with frozen beards but happy over some of the best trail conditions of the season.
The eight-dog class traveled approximately 15 miles.
Riggs finished first with a time of 59:58. Perry of Power finished just 2:32 behind Riggs. Third place went to Pearson from Choteau with a time 1:9:32. British Columbia musher Bush finished in 1:14:25.
Skijoring teams and four-dog sled dog teams were canceled Friday night as Montana faced another round of harsh weather with heavy snow and drifting conditions.
