A Post Falls infant who was allegedly harmed by his father continues to make strides in recovery at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, police said on Thursday.

The 4-month-old boy was in stable condition Thursday, Post Falls police Capt. Greg McLean said.

"The baby opened his eyes for a few minutes," McLean said. "They are still waiting to see if the brain reduces on its own so they do not have to do surgery."

Jeremiah D. Weaver, the infant's 20-year-old father, was arrested Tuesday night and faces felony injury to child and possession of drug paraphernalia charges. His bond was set at $100,000.

When officers responded to Weaver's residence in the 1900 block of east Coeur d'Alene Avenue, the child was unconscious and having difficulty breathing, police say.

Weaver told officers he found his child in the back bedroom unresponsive and not breathing.

Officers started CPR on the child. Paramedics arrived moments later and, upon further medical examination, discovered possible bruising to the back of the child's head.

The boy was transported to Kootenai Health before being airlifted to Sacred Heart.

Police said there are "suspicious circumstances" surrounding the case, but Weaver has denied any wrongdoing.

Citing an ongoing investigation, police have declined to comment on what they were told had happened, if anything, to the infant.

Both of the child's parents - the boy's mom is Weaver's girlfriend - have been cooperative during the investigation, McLean said. The mother was questioned, but not arrested.
