SANDPOINT - An Elmira man who was shot in the face following a home-invasion robbery on Monday was also doused with gasoline by his alleged assailants.

The detail emerged in court documents filed Wednesday against three Bonner County men who were implicated in the blitz, which ultimately led to an 11-hour standoff at an Ella Avenue home in Sandpoint.

Joseph Vencil Kluck Jr., who is accused of firing the gunshot that grazed the 57-year-old man's cheek, is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and resisting arrest.

Kluck, a 22-year-old unemployed transient from Renton, Wash., was ordered held at the Bonner County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail. A public defender was appointed to represent him, court records show.

Kluck's alleged accomplices in the attack, Joseph Eugene Cleveland and Jonathan Lee Comstock, are also charged robbery and resisting arrest. Cleveland faces an additional charge of second-degree kidnapping.

Cleveland, 18, and Comstock, 22, both of Sandpoint, are being held with bail set at $50,000. The two are alternately charged with either acting as principals in the crimes or aiding and abetting Kluck.

Judge Justin Julian appointed public defenders to represent Cleveland, who is unemployed, and Comstock, who is employed, according to court documents.

Sheriff's officials received a report of a home-invasion robbery at 5:30 a.m. The alleged victim told investigators he was bound with cord and blindfolded, threatened with a gun and had gasoline dumped on him.

After the suspects left the home, the man was able to loosen his binds and sat at a dining room table trying to decide how to summon help. He then felt a burning sensation on his cheek, heard glass shatter and saw there was a bullet hole in his cap, according to arrest reports.

Kluck is accused of firing into the home from outside, an act that was done with malice aforethought, but not premeditation, charging documents allege. Keys, a chain saw, coins and other personal property were taken during the heist.

Court documents do not indicate what drew sheriff's officials to the home at 610 Ella, although arrest reports indicate that Sandpoint Police went to the residence to investigate a dispute between two brothers who apparently had no connection to the to the robbery.

All three defendants have prior criminal records.

Kluck is a non-compliant registered sex offender in Washington who was convicted of second-degree child molestation, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. He was also being sought on bench warrants in Idaho for failing to pay fines in a domestic violence case in Boundary County and failing to appear at sentencing in an aggravated assault case in Kootenai County.

Cleveland and Comstock are awaiting trial in Bonner County in felony drug-possession cases.
