Clinic attack: For now, abortion is legal, and no one can take law into their own hands

I am writing in a show of solidarity with Susan Cahill, P.A. (“Future uncertain for vandalized clinic,” March 13 Daily Inter Lake).

I am not writing to feed the flames of the pro-life/pro-choice debate, nor to take a stand on the issue of abortion. I am writing because I am a member of the same community that hosts the All Families Healthcare Clinic.

I am a member of this fair state and nation — a democratic nation relying on laws to enforce when our integrity fails us. Our laws — written and defended by the legislators elected by the people — permit abortion. This wasn’t the case in our past and it may not be the case in the future but now — today — abortion is legal. Susan Cahill’s services included abortion (10 percent of her medical practice) but her services were not limited to abortion. She has served our community for decades, legally and ethically, providing services for which she was trained.

The alleged vandal appears to have acted upon his beliefs, abandoning the meaning of the law and terrorizing a member of our community. In this, he was dreadfully misguided.

For those who believe abortion to be morally wrong, I am not here to argue. Rather, I think it reprehensible to believe that such actions would right the perceived wrongs of others. The legal system is in place to ensure the preservation of our safety, democracy, and freedom.

My hope is that this same judicial system takes seriously Mr. Klundt’s alleged crimes and for others in our community to pursue change and expression of objection peacefully and with integrity.

If you object to abortion write to your congressman, volunteer your time, or help those who find themselves in trouble. Don’t take it out on the quality medical service providers our community is lucky to have.
