SOAP LAKE - World Wide Yarns owner Debra Gravelle and fiber artist Kim Graham didn't have to look very far for inspiration when they teamed up to create their new line of hand-dyed yarn.

Groovy Gals Yarns, which is available exclusively at the Soap Lake yarn shop, has a range of colors named after various town landmarks and notable people.

Knitters can make projects using the "Del-Red" red or "Midnight at Masquers" - a dark yarn with a bit of sparkle that pays tribute to the town's Masquers Theater.

And the pair are also currently deciding which shade of their blue yarns will bear the name "Blake Blue," a tribute to Soap Lake artist Brent Blake.

The first batch of Groovy Gals Yarns came out a couple of weeks ago.

Graham said they started with a few basic colors, like purple, pink and orange, that they knew customers would want. However, they do plan on adding more hues to the line in future batches, she said.

"The possibilities are endless as to what colors and shades we can do," said Graham.

She said she plans on not only making solid-colored yarn but multi-colored yarn as well. The first batch actually has a couple of multi-colored shades, including a yarn that goes from pink to light orange to yellow.

Multi-colored yarn gives knitters a chance to do something fun with their projects, Gravelle said.

"Say you want an orange sweater but don't want it just one shade of orange," she said. "With the multi-colored orange you can have a sweater in different subtle shades."

Graham said she also plans on making some colors that represent various sports teams. Seahawks colors will definitely be included, she said.

The yarn currently available is a finger-weight yarn, which is perfect for light-weight projects, Gravelle said. But they will introduce a worsted weight yarn in the next couple of months, she said.

Gravelle said the yarn they use is a mix of Superwash wool, silk and nylon. What will make the yarn unique is the colors they come up with, she said.

"Kim (Graham) is a fiber artist, she's going to come up with some cool colors," Gravelle commented.

She said they want Groovy Gals Yarns to be a fun addition to some of the other things customers find in the shop. The new yarn gives knitters more color options for their projects and it also makes a neat gift or souvenir, Gravelle said.

"It's unique to the shop, and unique to Soap Lake," she said.
