MOSES LAKE - There was no easing into the season for Moses Lake softball.

After losing about a week's worth of preparation due to inclement weather and the girls basketball team's run through the state tournament, the Chiefs had to open the season against 3A power University.

Starting pitcher Payton Reece, dealing with back issues, was unable to make it out of the first inning after giving up four runs en route to a 9-1 loss against University.

"University's a quality team," head coach Dave Gregory said. "They're usually right there in the state tournament every year."

Marnie Skinner replaced Reece on the hill and was able to record 10 strikeouts, but also gave up five more runs, three of which were earned.

"My young pitchers I think had a rude awakening," Gregory said. "It's what the big boys can do."

Tressa Radach was the lone Chief who found her offense, going 3-4 with a home run. Moses Lake sprayed eight hits throughout the game, however the Chiefs were unable to get that one hit to spark a rally.

"We didn't get that key hit with two outs," Gregory said. "We had the bases loaded one time with two outs and we couldn't come through. Another team we had runners on second and third I think with two outs and we didn't come through."

Gregory said his defense seemed tentative, but corrections should come with more experience.

"We only had actually one error but they just ... We had about a dozen mental errors you know what I mean?" He said. "Kids were afraid to throw and stuff like that, afraid to make a mistake. We just got to go with our instinct and do it."

Moses Lake has one more home game against Lewis and Clark Thursday at 4 p.m. before traveling to East Wenatchee for Saturday's Eastmont Mix and Match.
