A Kalispell man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after law enforcement officers from two agencies responded to a report of a man with a handgun north of Kalispell.
Millard Smith, 32, is in the Flathead County Detention Center on a preliminary charge of assault with a weapon.
According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, the Montana Highway Patrol initially responded to the report, which started as a road rage incident in Kalispell.
“They called it a hit-and-run crash, but it was really minor, he bumped him with a trailer hitch or something,” Curry said. “The victim followed him up to the area of U.S. 93 and McDermott Lane, then the male allegedly got out of his vehicle and pointed a handgun at the victim.”
The alleged victim got back in his vehicle and drove to a house from which he called 911.
Smith drove to a home on McDermott Lane, where he was approached by a deputy and taken into custody without incident.
Curry said that although no shots were fired and the two motorists involved separated without incident, a large number of deputies responded because there was a gun involved and the incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. during a shift change.
Although not all of them responded, a total of 10 deputies received the dispatch call.
