All-State wrestlers

Twenty Columbia Falls High School wrestlers were recently honored as All-State and All-Conference selections. All-State included Zayne Brunz, Mason Fetters, Shonn Roberts, Spencer Ross, Bryan Shaffer, Cody Walters and Winfield West. All-Conference included Haze Bell, Brunz, Andrew Burgess, Mikey Denison, Fetters, Colton Gove, Kaleb Gravelin, Wyatt Green, Manny Guzman, Storm Kemppainen, Chase Ramberg, Roberts, Ross, Ike Schweikert, Shaffer, Walters, West and Jason Williams.

Roberts recognized

Columbia Falls junior wrestler Shonn Roberts was recently named “Best of the Best” by Montana Recruiter Magazine. Roberts won the state Class A wrestling title at 126 pounds — his third state title in a row.

Hoop honors

Columbia Falls senior Haley Belgarde and junior Ciera Finberg were named to the Montana Class A All-Tournament Team for their play during the tournament in Great Falls.

All-State basketball

Three Columbia Falls basketball players were selected for All-State team — junior Winter Kemppainen and freshman Cydney Finberg for the girls and senior Jared Trinastich for the boys. Girls All-Conference selections included, first team, Kemppainen, Cydney Finberg, senior Haley Belgarde and junior Ciera Finberg; second team, sophomore Ellie Johnson and senior Andrea Getts; and honorable mention, Kiara Burlage. Boys All-Conference selections were, first team, Trinastich and senior Alex Presnell; second team, Ty Morgan, and honorable mention, junior Jayce Fagerland, sophomore Grant Wallace and senior Nakia Alexander.

Babe Ruth auction

Glacier Babe Ruth will hold their fundraising auction at the Blue Moon Nite Club, U.S. 2 and Highway 40, on Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m. People are advised to get there early to sign up for an auction number. A lot of items are up for auction. For more information, contact Ray Queen at 253-0857 or Trevor Kjensrud at 471-5045.

Hummer signs

Columbia Falls senior player Tiffany Hummer has signed a letter of intent to play softball for the Lady Jacks at Dakota College, in Bottineau, North Dakota. Hummer lettered for three years with the Wildkats at middle infielder. She was a second-team, all-conference selection following her sophomore and junior seasons. Her batting averages for the past two seasons were .305 and .354. She also plays second base and shortstop.

Soccer fundraiser

The Flathead Rapids, the North Valley soccer club for Columbia Falls and Whitefish, will hold its spring “Meltdown” fundraiser at the Great Northern Brewing Company, in Whitefish, on Thursday, March 27, at 6 p.m. Team coach O’Brien Byrd says the club is in desperate need of new equipment, balls, nets, and to keep its programs affordable for local kids.

Spring soccer

The Flathead Rapids soccer club will hold its 8-week long Spring Academy program on April 15 through June 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Register online at www.flatheadrapids.com. Deadline is March 22.

Umpires needed

Umpires are needed for Glacier Babe Ruth and Cal Rypken baseball leagues for Columbia Falls and Whitefish. For more information, contact Frank Sizemore at 406-253-0810.

Kelsey DeWit honored

Montana Tech senior Kelsey DeWit was named to the Frontier Conference honorable mention all-conference women’s basketball team. The former Wildkat basketball player played center for Montana Tech. DeWit scored more than 1,000 points for Montana Tech, averaging 10 points and 4.7 rebounds in 23 games during her senior year.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
