BONNERS FERRY — While some local and state seats will go unchallenged in the May 20 primary, others are being heavily contested.

No one filed to oppose three local incumbents, David Ryals for assessor, Glenda Poston as the clerk of the District Court and Mick Mellett, the coroner.

Three applicants filed to run for retiring Treasurer Jenny Fessler’s position: Sue Larson, Becky James and Scot Lindsay. All are from Bonners Ferry.

For District 1 of the county commissioner race, Jeannie Robinson is challenging incumbent LeAlan Pinkerton for the Republican seat.

Former Sheriff and Commissioner Ron Smith will challenge the winner as an Independent in November.

The District 2 race is even more contested, with Bonners Ferry’s Philip Sweet challenging incumbent Walt Kirby for the seat in the Republican primary. Tim Tucker from Moyie Springs is running as a Democrat in the fall general election along with two Independents, John White and Terry Capurso, both from Moyie Springs.

Dave Kramer will be challenged by Sara Hall for the Naples Precinct Committee Republican nomination. Stephen F. Howlett will run against the winner as a Democrat in November. All other races will be decided in the fall.
