The Whitefish Theatre Company presents the award-winning play “Other Desert Cities” at the O'Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.
Nominated in 2012 for a Pulitzer Prize, this smart drama, called “the most richly enjoyable new play for grown-ups,” opens with a sneak preview night on April 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Performances continue April 4, 5, 11, and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 6 and 13 at 4 p.m.
A riveting new work by the creator of the television drama “Brothers & Sisters,” Jon Robin Baitz's “Other Desert Cities” was named the Outstanding Play by the Outer Critics Circle and called "the best new play on Broadway" by The New York Times.
After a six-year absence, Brooke Wyeth returns home to Palm Springs to celebrate Christmas with her parents, brother and aunt. But the warm desert air turns chilly when news of her soon-to-be published memoir threatens to revive the most painful chapter of the family's history. With her parents trying to cling to their affluent social status, the family is thrown into turmoil and must come to grips with its painful past. The New York Daily News calls this dysfunctional family drama "a winner … funny and fierce, invigorating and intelligent."
“This is a gripping family drama with such natural dialogue that is so full of heart,” director Scarlett Schindler said. “The characters represent so many American families and their experiences when they face adversity. People are going to relate to this family, their pain, their pride, and their devotion to one another.”
Crackling with wit and razor-sharp one-liners, “Other Desert Cities” has a fierce cast of characters and a compelling storyline from the opening scene to its riveting conclusion.
The production features Dawn Watland as Brooke Wyeth, Lori Collins as Polly Wyeth, Scotty MacLaren as Lyman Wyeth, Alicia Blake as Silda Grauman, and Dan Dammerman as Trip Wyeth.
“This is a stellar group of seasoned WTC actors, the best of the best,” Schindler said. “Bringing this show to fruition has been such a fluid and organic experience with each actor bringing something unique to the show. They all relate to the characters on a personal and emotional level and do them such honor bringing them to life.”
Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, and $8 for students, with reserved seating. Tickets for the sneak preview performance on April 3 are $10 with tickets sold only at the door.
