HELENA — State investigators have closed a year-long investigation into the theft of money from Mineral County Justice Court and will not be pursuing charges.

The Department of Justice said Thursday that it was unable to prove who was responsible for alleged thefts of more than $9,200 because the court lacked proper accounting.

Justice of the Peace Wanda James has been on voluntary, paid administrative leave during the investigation.

State officials say it’s conceivable that more than one person was stealing funds so there’s no way to prove a specific individual was responsible.

Additional allegations of travel voucher violations and campaign violations could be pursued by local officials.

Mineral County Attorney Marcia Boris says she has not finished reviewing the state’s investigative report and has made no decision.
